Hippocrates refers to a Greek physician who has been honored as the father of medicine and also shared the belief that the brain controlled all senses and movements. He was the first to recognize that paralysis occurred on the side of the body opposite the side of a head injury.Hippocrates based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body. He held the belief that illness had a physical and a rational explanation. He argued that all mental and physical disorders had natural causes and that treatment of such disorders should consist of such things as rest, proper diet, and exercise. Hippocrates lived from 460 to 370 B.C.
