Postpartum depression or
PPD refers to a woman’s clinical depression that occurs after childbirth which is mild to moderately severe depression that begins within three (3) months following childbirth.
Postpartum depression is characterized by the mother’s severe depression, apathy,
thoughts of harming the newborn and/or herself,
delusions, strong
feelings of
sadness, resentment, and
despair that may appear shortly after childbirth and can linger for months. Postpartum depression is a serious psychiatric
condition requiring clinical
intervention.
