Compensatory rivalry refers to a threat to internal validity that occurs when an untreated group learns about special treatment received by another group, then works extra hard to show they can perform just as well as that group. Compensatory rivalry is occasionally called the John Henry Effect.

Compensatory task refers to a task or project that a group can complete by literally averaging together (mathematically combining) individual members solutions or recommendations.

- Compensatory-response model : Compensatory-response model refers to a model of conditioning in which a conditioned stimulus (CS) that has been repeatedly associated with the primary response (a-process) to an unconditoned stimulus (US) will eventually come to elicit a compensatory response (b-process).

Competence refers to the person's ability to adapt to one’s environment.

Competence motivation refers to the desire to exercise mastery by effectively manipulating objects or social interactions.

Competence -environmental press theory refers to a theory under Ecological and Systems Theory proposed by Lawton and Nahenow which proposed that adaptation is optimal when ability and demands are in balance. This theory put strong emphasis on biological, psychological and social effects on human development and put moderate emphasis on life cycle.

Competency refers to evidence that is admissible contrasted with that which is not.

Competency to stand trial refers to a prediction by a mental health expert of the defendant's cognitive and emotional stability during the period of the trial.
