Diffusion-of-responsibility effect refers to the belief that we don't need to help in an emergency because other people will do so. Diffusion of responsibility is a reduction of personal responsibility experienced by individuals in groups and social collectives identified by John Darley and Bibb Latané in their studies of Bystanders’ failures to help someone in need.
